Therapy for Teens and Pre-Teens

We help teens and pre-teens navigate the difficult time of middle and high school. With all the pressure to perform in so many aspects of life, including that which comes from social media, it can be helpful to learn important coping skills and have an outlet they can trust. Often teens refuse to talk to their parents about certain things, but will talk to another trusted adult. Our counselors can help assess whether or not your teen or pre-teen is in any dangerous situations, or is a danger to themselves or others.

Often in the pre-teen or teenage years, anxiety and depression can start to rear their ugly heads. This might present in a different manner that it would for an adult.

Here are some symptoms we see:

  • School refusal
  • Social isolation
  • Grades slipping
  • Engagement in dangerous behaviors
  • Substance use
  • Hanging out with the “wrong crowd”
  • Changes in mood or behavior

Types of Therapy Implemented:

  • DBT
  • CBT
  • Motivational Interviewing

Some teens will benefit more from a “coaching” type of relationship. We are able to be flexible and meet those needs, so that it doesn’t feel as much like traditional talk therapy.
